‘Five-0’ finale ranks second in its time slot

“Hawaii Five-0” finished a successful first season Monday night with a plot that had more twists than Tantalus Drive, a breathless race to the credits and a body count that included two recurring characters.
But even all that was not enough to claim the hour, according to Nielsen ratings released yesterday by CBS.
In its 24th and final episode of the season, “Five-0” drew 10.4 million viewers to finish behind ABC’s “Castle,” which drew 12.9 million viewers. NBC’s “Law & Order: L.A.” finished third with 4.3 million viewers.

Nonetheless, it was still a remarkable season for “Five-0.”
When CBS aired first-run episodes, “Five-0” won its hour 13 times. It became the top-rated new show of the season.
It premiered in September to an audience of 14.2 million viewers, something that was only surpassed once: “Five-0” drew 19.3 million viewers when the network aired the show in a special Sunday time slot after the NFL’s AFC championship game.

One of the biggest challenges for the show was its own legacy. The original “Five-0” aired from 1968-1980 but has remained an iconic favorite among Hawaii residents — and that could have worked against the new version, said Walea Constantinau, commissioner for the Honolulu Film Office.
“The legacy can be like a gale-force wind against you if you don’t do it right,” she said. “The trick is to balance the old with the new. It is never easy, but that show is such a big show and had so much to live up to. And they met all expectations.”

For the whole season, “Five-0” had been a conversation starter wherever she went, Constantinau said.
“I can go just about anywhere in this town and someone will ask about ‘Five-0,’” she said. “They are excited to say they watch it all the time.”

Monday’s episode ended with a number of cliffhangers and the promise to continue the story line. But a second season won’t be official until today, when CBS announces its fall lineup.
It would be a felony plot twist worthy of the finale if that failed to happen. CBS began the season with only a 13-episode commitment to “Five-0” and finished with national and international syndication deals that will earn about $2.5 million per episode. Leslie Moonves, the network’s chief executive officer, earlier this month called “Five-0” a franchise worth billions of dollars.

Peter Lenkov, the show’s executive producer and the man behind the rebooted version of “Five-0,” recently told the Star-Advertiser that his writers are already working on scripts and that production would resume in July.

A second season won’t be easier, but the culture of the show will be familiar, even comfortable for all concerned, Lenkov said.
“We are a well-oiled machine now,” he said. “The writing staff knows who the characters are. They are familiar with their rhythms as actors. They know what works and what doesn’t. And the crew is a family.”

But for every success there is a failure, and yesterday that was the case for the other network drama that filmed in Hawaii this past season: ABC’s “Off the Map.” The drama about doctors working in a remote jungle clinic was canceled by the network.

Let chips fall for 'Five-O' TV watching game

Just in time for the season finale of “Hawaii Five-O,” Guy With a Remote rolls out TV watching game for the series.
“Five-O” may not always be the most believable show on TV, but it is the most enthusiastically fun show to watch.
Guy is especially fond of the bro-mance between McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and Danny (Scott Caan). Forget the crime of the week, the show is all about their conversations in the car.
Typically TV watching games are drinking games that involve everyone gathering with the favorite (usually alcoholic) drink in and sipping, chugging or finishing depending on what happens on screen.
Over-imbibing isn’t cool and we don’t want anyone to get alcohol poisoning, so our game uses chocolate chips instead. You can substitute peanut butter or butterscotch chips or any other candy you prefer. The prizes are up to you.
You may wish to play along as your favorite character, or be the entire team (for that you may need a bigger bag of chips). The season finale airs 10 tonight on CBS.

Hawaii Five-0 Promotes Masi Oka

SPOILER ALERT: The pivotal character getting whacked in Monday night’s Hawaii Five-0 season finale is… not Max!
I know this because sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Masi Oka — who began recurring on H5-0 as the socially awkward coroner in October  — will be returning next season as a full-fledged series regular.
This marks Oka’s first full-time series gig since Heroes was put out to pasture by NBC in 2010.
The Eye network has yet to formally renew Five-0 for a second season, but a pickup is seen as a foregone conclusion.

Hawaii Five-0 Finale: Will McGarrett Go Too Far to Catch Wo Fat? (spoiler)

Many TV dramas create mysteries in their freshmen seasons that take years to resolve. The producers of CBS' Hawaii Five-0 are taking a slightly different approach.

In Monday's season finale (10/9c, CBS) McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin), Danno (Scott Caan) and the team will find answers to many of the questions surrounding the toolbox of clues McGarrett found after his father's death, including the connection to international terrorist Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos).

"We played the 'champ box' over the course of the first season, and it feels like we have to come to some kind of resolution with it," executive producer Peter Lenkov tells TVGuide.com. "It'll feel odd for two guys who are investigators to not be able to discover what those clues are. They can solve all these other crimes but not answer the questions right in front of them? But I think with everything that's answered, there's going to be a new question posed."

But digging into that past is a risky proposition for McGarrett, especially since Wo Fat has already given McGarrett a warning. "McGarrett is not letting go of that bone," Lenkov says. "He is continually trying to get that information and pursuing Wo Fat, and that makes him finally surface. Wo Fat decides he's got to be a little more proactive with how he deals with McGarrett."

That's bad news for McGarrett and those closest to him, including teammates Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) and Kono (Grace Park) as well as Gov. Jameson and one of her aides (returning guest stars Jean Smart and Kelly Hu). "It's sort of our all-star episode because everybody who started with us is coming back," Lenkov says. "Because it's very heavy in mythology, it requires a lot of those characters to be back in the picture. They all have one thing in mind: They want to get Wo Fat.

"But the finale isn't necessarily a manhunt," Lenkov continues. "There is a murder, and so there's definitely a mystery element to the show that we always have. It just happens to involve one of our people very personally and very directly."

Indeed, one of the show's characters will fall — and McGarrett may be to blame. As you can see in the clip below, his obsession with this case drives him to operate outside the law. "The governor can only protect him so much," Lenkov says. "McGarrett is a guy who goes to extremes. He's going go further than he's gone all season and he's going to be very reckless.

"It's going to end and your jaw's going to be on the floor," Lenkov adds. "It really is a shocker. I'm probably not doing myself any favors because it sounds like I'm overhyping it, but ... it's going to be a great reward. We're really going to pay off a lot of stuff we set up. And it's really got a great twist at the end."

O’Loughlin promises surprises in ‘Five-0’ finale (spoiler)

Death. Big plot twists. Huge cliffhanger.
“Hawaii Five-0” star Alex O’Loughlin said viewers can expect all that and more in the first-season finale of the CBS hit (tomorrow at 10 p.m. on WBZ, Ch. 4).
“Somebody very close to the governor is killed in a pretty brutal way, and we all witness it and we’re all a part of it,” O’Loughlin told the Herald from Oahu, Hawaii, where the show films. “A whole bunch of information is brought to light that will make us question a couple of people that are really important to the Five-0 task force. This Five-0 group that has been so tight the whole time is fractured in this final episode in a way that way that may not be reparable."

The Australian native revealed that “a huge thing” will happen to his character, Detective Steve McGarrett. “He finds himself in a place where he has to fight for his life, and then something happens that he can’t escape from,” O’Loughlin said.

The rest of the team also will undergo big changes. Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) will be offered a second chance through the HPD. A secret resurfaces from Kono’s (Grace Park) past. Danny (Scott Caan) must make a choice about his future.

“(All this) will take us into a very interesting season two,” O’Loughlin said.
That the 34-year-old actor is even talking about a second season is a new experience. He headlined last year’s failed CBS medical show “Three Rivers,” as well as the equally short-lived 2007 vampire drama “Moonlight.”

“It feels of fantastic,” O’Loughlin said of being on one of the biggest new hits of the season. “I’m very, very proud of this show.”
He hesitated to join the series when it was first offered to him.
“Having been the poster boy for two network shows that had essentially failed, if that were to happen a third time, I was really concerned about that,” he said.
Even though his previous series were canceled, O’Loughlin developed a devoted fan base. It’s something that he’s still not used to.

“I love, love, love my fans and appreciate them so much,” he said. “It’s a very, very strange experience having people you don’t really know, know you and express great emotion to you. It’s validating to a point, but it’s also really bizarre.”
The actor relocated to Hawaii for the series and recently purchased a home there. He’ll spend the hiatus between seasons visiting his family in Australia and enjoying some much-needed downtime.
“I’m working on my tan,” he said

Hawaii Five-O Recap: Near Death Experience Reignites Danny And Rachel

Tonight on Hawaii Five-0 “Ua Hiki Mai Kapalena Pau”, Five-O are closing in on Wo Fat, which leads him to release a biochemical weapon that could take out one of their own.
Five-0 has captured Wo Fat at his house and McGarrett gives the intel to the crew before busting in. However, when the team opens the doors, it’s been rigged to set off an explosion. Heat sensors show Wo Fat moving in the house, so McGarrett goes after him. But it’s not Wo Fat in the house, but Sang Min. A gun fight ensues, and Danny comes across a dead body, which is laced with Sarin. He starts convulsing while McGarrett rushes him to the hospital.

Agent Jenna Kaye is back, and she realizes the chemical that was in the milk is Sarin, a nerve agent, which is not only potent if ingested but also trans-thermal, which means when Danny touched him for a pulse, he was infected. She calls McGarrett, telling him to get him on a certain medicine now, otherwise he’ll die.
The crew rush to the hospital and McGarrett tells them that he’s been stabilized in thanks to Kaye. Steven then leaves to get Gracie. While pulling up at the school, Sang Min calls and wants to make a bargain. Steve’s bargain is hanging up. Then he turns into “Uncle Steve” which makes me go “awwwwwwwwwwwe” with a big girlie squeal.

Back at HQ, Chin has the identity of the vic, Amoka, who was arrested 6 months ago, and was found in a house that wasn’t his, but of two people from Cali, Jeff and Shelia Fallon. Kaye and Kono skype with the Fallon’s who said they were supposed to be there a week ago but canceled the trip. And they fired their house keeper, Gabrielle, after seeing that he had been stealing money from them, and he apparently didn’t take it well.

Chin and Kono track down the house keeper, Gabrielle, who says his son is sick and that’s why he needed the money, but he has no idea about the Sarin in the milk. They show him pictures, and he gapes when he sees it’s Amoka, who he had told about a spare key where he could stay when the shelter was overrun. However, Kono got Connor Elliott’s fingerprint off the key, who openly despises Jeff…his brother-in-law.
Kaye and Steve go by Connor’s work, and he claims he never goes to the house. Oh wait, he went that one time to drop off paperwork that Jeff had asked him to do! Kaye calls him out and Steve notes the tan-line on his ring finger….someone’s having an affair with Jeff’s sister!

At HQ, Kono tells Kaye and Steve that she got a call from the CIA, and the Sarin strand is from a failed Chechen rebel attack in 2005, and the FSB shows the owner is McHale…who came into Hawaii 5 days ago! Steve and Chin bust into the house, but it’s empty. However, Kono has found that his card is being used at an ATM now, a few blocks down. Kono stalls for the boys to catch up, and there’s a car chase, then a gun chase, when McHale touches a canister with Sarin in it. He dies, and the boys find a trunk full of empty canisters.

IA stops by, and tells Chin that the bills don’t match, so thanks but no thanks. Kaye steps in and finds that the canisters are the perfect way to keep Sarin from killing the makers, and the producers of them is Jeff and Connor’s company. Connor says he was on the main island when the calls took place, so all eyes fall on the secretary (the woman he was having an affair with that Jeff told him to end).
Steve goes back to the hospital to find Rachel in the bed with Danny and Gracie on the couch. Danny covers his mouth and Steve walks away. I’m excited, they’re TOTALLY getting back together! The next day, Rachel takes Danny back to work, and tells him she was happy this happened, so she had a reason to come home. The vacay for her and Stan was to “save” their marriage but there’s nothing to save. YAYAYAYAYAY I’m so excited!!

Inside, McGarrett sidebars Danny about Rachel and Danny says they’ve gotten close…when Sang Min walks in, asking for protective custody in exchange for any sentence.
Tune in for the season finale next Monday!

Scott in final eight episodes of Entourage

The final eight episodes will also feature The Big Bang Theory's Johnny Galecki, playing a tweaked version of himself, whom managers Eric (Kevin Connolly) and Scott (Scott Caan) sign as a new client, as well as a cameo by Christian Slater. Sports fans should keep an eye out for the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira, as well as the New York Knicks' Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, who are recruited by Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) to help establish a popular New York-based Italian restaurant in L.A. By the way, with Entourage set to wrap in mid-June.

Larisa Oleynik: There's No Hawaii Five-0 Romance Between Danno and Jenna

Sorry, 'shippers, but love isn't on the luau menu for Jenna and Danno ... yet.
With the return of Larisa Oleynik's character Jenna Kaye to Hawaii Five-0 on Monday at 10/9c on CBS, fans are wondering if some flattering comments Detective Danny "Danno" Williams (Scott Caan) made about her could mean a romance in the making when they meet again. "I don't think so," Oleynik tells TVGuide.com. "I think Danno is a flirt but I think ultimately he only has eyes for his ex-wife Rachel."

Well, a reconciliation might be a little difficult, seeing as how Rachel (Claire Van der Boom) has moved on and married another guy. Then again, the chemistry between Danno and Jenna doesn't feel amorous at all, Oleynik says.

"Since she's the rookie now, they've started throwing stuff in like Danny making fun of Jenna a little bit," she says. "There's a joke they make in the episode about Jenna having her bulletproof vest on backwards to throw her off her game." Apparently, the tone of this relationship is echoed on-set. Olyenik adds, "Scott for sure gives me a hard time and makes fun of me on set a lot, but in a way that's totally like a big brother."

Jenna has more important things to worry about -- such as the villain Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos), who killed her fiance -- than her love life. For now, she's focusing on working with the Five-0 team, including Danno, Steve McGarrett (Alex O' Loughlin), Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park).

"She's not necessarily part of the group because they will always exist as the superhero-like foursome," Oleynik explains. "Jenna's trajectory right now is really trying to figure out how best she fits, what her strengths are with the team. She's not a special agent at all. She's never been in the field. She has no experience other than to just sitting behind desk really. As much as she wants to get that experience, she's best able to serve the team by gathering and relaying information."

On Monday's episode, Jenna has been in communication with team and closer to finding Wo Fat's whereabouts in Hawaii. "That's sort of where the episode begins," says Oleynik. "And then Danny's exposed to a lethal neurological agent. Trying to figure out who did it is what the episode is about. And like all Five-0 episodes, it's never who it seems. I think this one will be a little shocking."

Oh no, Danno! "It's a close call," says Oleynik, who assures us he's alive and well in the following week's finale on May 16 in which Jenna returns

"I got my first explosion, and there's some running ... well, just a little bit," Oleynik admits. "I'm out of breath as Alex and Dan are carrying on a conversation because everyone's so ridiculously in shape on this set. Obviously Jenna is not the toughest girl in the room. She may have a shade of a tan by now, but she's pretty much sticking to the comfort zone of these mass quantities of information and sorting it all out. The shirt is still tucked in. That's the fun of this character."

With her help though, the team finally catches up with their target. "McGarrett and Wo Fat definitely come to face to face in the finale," she confirms. "We also learn more about the envelopes, those bits of information from the toolbox, and who is sending them and the intention behind it. Oh, and HPD responds kindly to one of Chin Ho's recent acts. They may or may not try to woo him as it were."

Not everything will run smoothly, however. The team will have to learn to operate without the benefit of the governor's protection. "That's a big part of what the episode is about," Oleynik says. "There has been a lot of rule-bending in the past, and the team has gotten away with a lot. A lot of those loose ends sort of come to a head."

Actress battles nerves in her quirky 'Five-0' role

Larisa Oleynik, the newest regular cast member of "Hawaii Five-0," feels she's not tough enough to be in the action-oriented police drama, but she can definitely disarm you with a smile.
She's just that nice.

The San Francisco native plays Jessica Kaye, a former CIA analyst sent to Hawaii to help "Five-0" hunt down Steve McGarrett's arch nemesis, Wo Fat. Oleynik shot three episodes this season, including the finale, which airs next week. Ask her about the experience and her enthusiasm bubbles out.
"I am totally loving it," she said during a break in shooting, before production wrapped for the season last month. "I think it's becoming more and more apparent that they are trying to infuse my personality and my sense of humor into the character because clearly I am not the toughest broad on the block."
The 29-year-old Oleynik is perhaps best known for her roles as Bianca in the 1999 movie "10 Things I Hate About You" and Alex in the Nickelodeon series "The Secret World of Alex Mack."
Her "Five-0" character is described by CBS as being more cerebral than the cast's only other regular female lead, the butt-kicking Grace Park, who plays Kono Kalakaua. Jessica Kaye has been quirky, even a tad naive, but otherwise fun to watch.
"Five-0" is no easy gig, though.

"I'll tell you, I'm a bundle of nerves," Oleynik said. "I think it's so exciting and I am happy to be here, and I know what an incredible opportunity it is."
Her solution is to consciously work at relaxing — to "shake out" the butterflies and trust in her ability to arrive on set prepared, she said.
"That's been my greatest challenge, honestly, because I just want it so bad," she said. "I just want to do such a good job, you know?"
"Five-0" executive producer Peter Lenkov recently said Oleynik's character is now a regular part of the cast, but it doesn't sound like he told Oleynik.
"Well, I don't know," she said. "I would be thrilled if that's the way it worked out. But nothing is official until it's official."

Ratings: Hawaii Five-0 Sinks to Series-Low Demo

Hawaii Five-0 sputtered to a series-low in the demo as Castle stormed to victory in prime time's final hour — undoubtedly with help from the Dancing With the Stars performance show that preceded it.

The ABC drama attracted 12.23 million people Monday night against fresh episodes of Five-0 (9.36 million) — which had Rick Springfield, who was arrested over the weekend for drunken driving, as a guest.

Mega Buzz: A Five-0 Death (Spoiler)

What can you tell me about the death in the Hawaii Five-0 finale? — Alan

I can tell you that McGarrett may not be blameless in the demise. It seems his single-mindedness about catching Wo Fat may put his team members at risk. 'Hawaii Five-0' could become the next billion-dollar franchise for CBS

"Hawaii Five-0" books 'em for CBS.
Profits, that is.
The sun-drenched remake of "Hawaii Five-O," starring Alex O'Laughlin and Scott Caan, can boast something few first-season scripted TV shows can: It is already on track to turn a profit.
On a conference call with analysts regarding first quarter results Tuesday, CBS Corp. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves said the company will rake in nearly $5 million an episode with the sale of the show's reruns to Time Warner Inc.'s TNT channel, in addition to license fees paid by foreign broadcasters. Foreign revenue, he said, amounts to $2.5 million an episode.

"This is only 'Hawaii Five-0''s first year and it’s already on its way to being another billion-dollar franchise for us, joining 'NCIS' and 'CSI,' which both remain strong on our network," Moonves said.
Broadcast license fees rarely cover the cost to produce a scripted show, so most TV series do not recognize a profit until the third or fourth season when rerun deals are traditionally negotiated. But in recent years, cable channels have been bidding on promising new network shows right out of the gate. That gives networks such as CBS a greater incentive to produce and own their content.
NBCUniversal's USA Network clinched a deal to buy reruns of "NCIS: Los Angeles" after just six original episodes had aired on CBS, Moonves said. TNT bought "Hawaii Five-O" half-way through the current TV season.
"Quality premium hours are very tough to come by and there’s a bidding war for these types of things," Moonves explained. "The marketplace is very strong both internationally, which continues to grow, as well as domestically.  If you have the right kind of [programs] that aren’t serialized, that have an action component, you can get these kind of numbers. So it’s a great business."
CBS posted revenue of $3.51 billion and net earnings of $202 million in the first quarter. The results surpassed expectations.
