An Afternoon with Hawaii Five-0

The original HAWAII FIVE-O was one of the most popular and long-running crime series in television history. In 2010, the most anticipated new drama premiered to more than 20 million viewers, captivating broad demographics with pulsating action, breathtaking cinematography, seductive, funny, and above all, talented all star cast.
HAWAII FIVE-0 was back, booking Monday night’s lead on CBS
Alex O’Loughlin commands the screen as lieutenant Steve McGarrett, Scott Caan as Danny Williams at his side full of self-deprecation, wit and reason. Daniel Dae Kim as Chin Ho Kelly grounds the force with heart, intellect and cultural understanding. Grace Park as Kono embodies the ideals of every aspiring ass-kicking, badge-wearing, wave-cutting, sexy woman. Supporting the 5-0 cast, Executive Producers Peter Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci assembled the most coveted acting credits on primetime, including Masi Oka, Terry O’Quinn, Mark Dacascos, Lauren German and Hawaii local, Taylor Wily, among numerous other leading actors whom have contributed to the new Hawaii Five-0.
Over the course of the first season, the cast battled criminals and corruption, betrayals and loss, while the show maintained an addictive balance of action, character drama, and story arcs. Notably, HAWAII FIVE-0 has dedicated its creative and production efforts to do justice for the demographics and traditions of its host culture, Hawaii, including a multi-cultural cast, integrated business brands, iconic landmarks and of course some requisite pidgin. In addition, the new 5-0 has reinvigorated Hawaii’s acting community by casting more than 60% of each episode with local talent.
This year, with Hawaii Five-0’s Season Two underway, HIFF is honored to present a unique panel discussion with the producers, cast, and select crew of the show. Panel attendees will engage in a rare Q&A session and leave with exclusive insight on what it takes to deliver network television’s leading drama.

Screening: Sunday, October 16, 2PM

'Hawaii Five-0' scoop: Jimmy Buffett to guest star (Spoiler)

Jimmy Buffett: Pilot in a tropical climate? Yeah, we’ll buy that.
EW has learned exclusively that the singer/songwriter/avid aviator will guest star in an upcoming episode of Hawaii Five-0. Buffett will play a veteran pilot who’s a pal of Lt. Commander Joe White (Terry O’Quinn), and he helps Five-0 rescue one of its own from a sticky situation.
The episode will air this November on CBS.

Another Hawaii Five-0 Death? (Spoiler)

Sounds like actress Larisa Oleynik may not be long for Hawaii Five-0. After being touted at the end of last season as a possible fifth member of the team, Larisa's role has been majorly downgraded as new regular characters, including Terry O'Quinn (Lt. Joe White) and Lauren German (Lori), pick up the slack.

Now executive producer Peter Lenkov tells me an upcoming story arc will spell an end to Larisa's tech-savvy character, Jenna Kaye, who (and this is me talking here) never quite clicked. "We're wrapping up the Jenna story," Lenkov says matter-of-factly. "She's going to disappear from her life for a little bit and then come back into it in Episode 10 (likely airing November 21) for a very big story that's going to be very McGarrett/Wo-Fat-centric. It has to do with the origins of McGarrett and takes us back to North Korea where we started in the pilot."

Hawaii Five-0 has proven itself fearless when it comes to killing off prominent characters. The first season finale saw recurring players Jean Smart (Gov. Jameson) and Kelly Hu (Laura Hills) both offed in shocking story twists.

Prior to Hawaii Five-0, Larisa's biggest roles were on The Secret World of Alex Mack and Third Rock from the Sun.

Terry O'Quinn Extends Hawaii Five-0 Stay

Sounds like Lost vet Terry O'Quinn has been enjoying his return to island living in his recurring role as a Navy SEAL working alongside Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) on Hawaii Five-0.

According to executive producer Peter Lenkov, Terry has agreed to extend his run as Lt. Commander Joe White. "His original deal was six episodes, and now we'll do another three," Lenkov reports. "And we're hoping for even more."

Terry still maintains hope of headlining his own series — possibly Hallelujah, a new soap currently being rewritten by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry after ABC failed to find a spot for the original pilot on its fall schedule. "Terry's a guy who really wants to get his own show, and he deserves that," Lenkov says. "That's his goal. But we'd love to make it work where he could do both."

DVD review: Hawaii Five-O: the Complete First Season

Review by RadioTimes

There’s lots of unexpected pleasure to be had from this reimagining of the classic cop show. First we have the bone-crunching fight sequences, then there’s the ongoing conspiracy thread that never outstays its welcome, and last (but certainly not least) there’s the inspired bromance between lead characters McGarrett and Danno. Series stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott (son of James) Caan keep things lively for the 24-episode run, while their bickering and ability to slide over the bonnet of any car on the islands have ensured the show a second season.

Formats: DVD and Blu-ray
Extra features: Making of the pilot, Inside Comic-Con, The Story of Season 1 featurette, Deleted scenes, Easter egg, Gag reel

Hawaii Five-0 Scene Spotting: Off to Lanai as the team grows... then shrinks.

Turns out Lanai was the star of the first neighbor island showcase in "Hawaii Five-0" — those south Lanai sea cliffs sure looked like Molokai in the preview. But there is definitely no mistaking all those pine trees: classic Lanai. Big props to the producers for island hopping. Good to see.

And welcome Tom Sizemore as Capt. Fryer of Internal Affairs (and a very menacing one at that), and Lauren German as Officer Lori Weston, assigned by the governor to "babysit" Five-0."

(Photo: Danno (Scott Caan), McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) and Weston on the trail of cult kidnappers. Norman Shapiro/CBS.)
To the locations:
  • The Molokai2Oahu SUP championship showed several excellent scenes of the race in the Ka Iwi Channel that separates the two islands.
  • The finish line was at Waimanalo Beach.
  • We meet Officer Weston at the governor's office, but that may have been a stand-in.
  • McGarrett and Weston beef over her new role in the parking area next to Iolani Palace, same place where Kono talks to Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) about her troubles.
  • Quick Shots: Diamond Head Road, Kahala side, and the Leeward Coast.
  • Aliiolani Hale, aka Five-0 Headquarters in downtown Honolulu.
  • Quick shots: Waikiki and the shallow reef off Kahala.
  • A gimme: Manoa Valley where the parents' home is.
  • The getaway car looks like it was ditched somewhere in Waialua, but definitely not Kamehameha Highway.
  • Another gimme: The Wailana Coffee House, followed by a chase scene that ended at the entrance to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, corner of Kalia Road and Ala Moana Blvd.
  • We're off to Lanai! The grocery store where the Five-0 team get the 411 on the cult they're tracking looks to be either the Pine Isle Market or Richard's Market. Any Lanai people out there?
  • The Stables at Koele look to be where the shootout with the cult is. (Pictured: McGarrett on one of its denizens Photo: Norman Shapiro/CBS.)
  • Quick Shots: The boat harbor at Sand Island, followed by a final Aliiolani Hale, where we watch Fryer strip Kono (Grace Park) of her badge...

Could the Team Lose Kono?

The Hawaii Five-0 task force had a reunion of sorts in last week's season premiere, but the team won't be the same now that there's a new boss, Lt. Gov. Denning (Richard T. Jones), in charge.
"He's a little tougher than the old one, so we need to be more careful with him," Scott Caan, who plays Danny "Danno" Williams, tells TVGuide.com. On Monday's episode (10/9c, CBS) Denning demonstrates that he's not about to let Five-0 slide with their lawless methods. He assigns Homeland Security profiler Lori Weston (Lauren German) to join the team to keep them in check.

Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Louglin) is unsurprisingly "dubious" about the newcomer.
The new Five-0 team doesn't have time for welcome parties or hazing rituals, however, when they get called to investigate the kidnapping of a teenage paddleboard champion.
Meanwhile, one of their own isn't aware that they have a new member. "Kono is not even around them. She doesn't even know that there's another person. She doesn't know anything," Grace Park says about her character, Kono Kalakaua, who lost her badge after being suspected of stealing money from HPD's evidence locker. "She suspects that she doesn't belong with the team, and they're all just trying to make her feel better. But eventually you have to go take care of your own business. That's what she embarks on. When Lori comes in, Kono is already out of the picture.

"Kono has been dealing psychologically with the same situation that her cousin Chin Ho's been [in], being scandalized," she continues. "It's almost worse, like a double hit in the same extended family. It's extra embarrassing. Just before they can celebrate his clean record or his being brought back, it's kind of sullied again."
Making life more difficult for her is Internal Affairs Capt. Vince Fryer (Tom Sizemore), who is continuing his interrogation of Kono. "Fryer's hot on her tail. He's onto her, the whole investigation. He doesn't believe her. He doesn't trust her. So he's really out to sniff out what he thinks is suspect. She's got a lot to cover up and try to prove at the same time. I think the character dynamic is interesting alone." Her pal McGarrett also has some problems when he runs into Fryer. "There's tension between the two characters," O'Loughlin confirms.

And even though Five-0 isn't Fryer's biggest fan, the same couldn't be said about the cast's opinion of Sizemore. Not only does Caan call him a "genius actor," but O'Loughlin promises, "He brings a whole new energy and a whole new level of danger and a whole new level of excitement to the show."

Hawaii Five-0 Soundtrack set to October 4 release

CBS Records will release a specially produced soundtrack for the hit television series HAWAII FIVE-0 on Tuesday, October 4 Hawaii Five-0: Original Songs From The Television Series will feature brand new and previously unreleased tracks from some of music’s most popular artists – including Bob DylanTrainGoo Goo DollsThe Swell SeasonSwitchfootJimmy CliffZiggy Marley and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro – that are available exclusively on this soundtrack.

HAWAII FIVE-0 producers listened to dozens of submitted tracks before choosing the ones best suited for this season’s upcoming storylines.  Hawaii Five-0:  Original Songs From The Television Series stands apart from TV soundtracks which merely compile a selection of songs that were heard in a series’ previous episodes.  Instead, as a result of this creative process, this collection features mostly brand-new and previously unreleased tracks that will be integrated into upcoming episodes this season.

Of particular note from this collection is a previously unreleased Bob Dylan track, “Don’t Ever Take Yourself Away.”  This island-flavored gem dates from recording sessions in the early 1980s, and was newly mixed and mastered for this soundtrack after being locked in the vaults for nearly 30 years.

As HAWAII FIVE-0 Executive Producer Peter Lenkov explains, “Music plays a big role in our show, and we are thrilled that so many great artists have provided us with exclusive tracks that can be so well integrated into our second season episodes.  As a result, fans will be able to experience a soundtrack album that is truly representative of Hawaii Five-0.”

The soundtrack also includes the first commercial release of the “Hawaii Five-0 Main Title Theme” that was newly recorded for the series launch in 2010.  Also featured is a suite of the show’s score, “Book ‘em Danno,” produced and arranged by Brian Tyler and Keith Power, which they assembled specifically for this album.  Songs featured in the show’s first season such as “Closer” from Corinne Bailey Rae and Hawaiian standard “Hi’ilawe” from John Cruz are also included.

HAWAII FIVE-0 airs on Mondays (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  The show is a contemporary take on the classic series about a new, elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the islands’ sun-drenched beaches.  Nearly 12 million people watch HAWAII FIVE-0 each week, making it one of the most popular television dramas and the show is licensed in more than 200 markets internationally.

'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: Ua Lawe Wale

Recap by Hollywood.com

S2E2: Last week's season 2 premiere of Hawaii Five-0 featured quite the shocking final scene (OBLIGATORY SPOILER ALERT!): Jenna and Wo Fat are in cahoots!

This week's episode, however, doesn't address that storyline very much at all -- that is, save for a brushed-over scene in which Jenna appears to be leaving the task force to find her long-missing fiancee -- focusing instead on a new addition to the task force, a new nemesis and the subtraction of one its members.

It all starts with a paddleboard competition whose champion turns up missing when it comes time for the trophy presentation. The young woman, Jen, is nowhere to be found, and as we soon learn, this is kidnapping case crazy enough for the likes of a Dateline special. The icing on the cake is that Jen has a heart defect that requires medicine, which, of course, she no longer has.

Before McGarrett and his team can even start their investigation, meanwhile, they learn that Gov. Denning has assigned a quasi-watchdog to their group: Officer Lori Weston (guest star Lauren German), a former Homeland Security agent.

McGarrett is immediately wary of (and flirtatious with) the stunning new "babysitter," but there isn't much time for bickering and nonpleasantries between the two, as they must begin their kidnapping case in earnest. They think they've got a lead when they learn of a young man named Matt Porter, but before long they discover that he is not an abductor but rather an "extractor" who essentially rescues those in need -- from a cult, for example.

And that's when McGarrett, Lori, Danny and Chin Ho begin to unravel the case: Jen is adopted; she was born into a cult, the leader of which (guest star Bruce Davidson) is her grandfather and wants her back after finding out that, despite Jen's mother's best efforts to trick into thinking that she'd died, she's in fact alive. And soon enough, Jen is back on his compound.

But so is Five-0! After a video-game-esque shootout and an escape attempt, via air, by Jen's grandfather (with his weakened grandfather in the passenger seat of his small jet), McGarrett gets his man. That's followed, eventually, by a touching encounter between Jen's harmless biological mother and her adoptive parents meeting at the hospital.

All seems on the verge of ending well -- but as is usually the case with Hawaii Five-0, an ominous cloud is cast over the whole gang in the final scene, and tonight's episode was no exception. After an investigation by Hawaii's Internal Affairs, Kono is stripped of her badge completely as a result of her role in the events of last season, and Vincent Fryer (guest star Tom Sizemore), head of IA, makes it clear that he will lay down the law harshly upon the rest of the group in order to enforce the governor's no-lenience policy. So ... uh-oh.

TOP FIVE MOMENTS FROM TONIGHT'S EPISODE

1. This quote from Danny to Lori, about McGarrett: "I apologize he lost his manners somewhere between the womb and kindergarten."
2. The introduction to Tom Sizemore, who is mysteriously shown from the behind for several seconds before turning around and nonchalantly facing Kono -- and us -- in her apartment!
3. This lovely, if odd, non sequitur courtesy of Lori, to McGarrett: "Dont you just hate that? The top-off. Ya know, you get just the right mix going coffee, cream, sugar, all working in perfect harmony and then when you're not looking, waitress comes, tops you off. Ruins a perfectly good cup of coffee; its why I switched to tea. They dont mess with that."
4. McGarrett presses Kaye -- who, let's not forget, is playing for the bad-guy team -- on what's been bothering her, and it seems momentarily as though she may be caught, only to reveal, as noted earlier in the recap, that her fiancee may be alive. Hmmmmm....
5. The climactic, Wild West-style shootout at the cult's compound
