Terry O'Quinn joins 'Hawaii Five-0'

Talented Lost veteran Terry O’Quinn has found his next TV gig, and he doesn’t even need to leave the Aloha State to do it.
O’Quinn has joined CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 in a recurring role, sources confirm (we were hoping O’Quinn would get hired to replace Laurence Fishburne on CSI, but alas… ). The actor will play a Navy Seal Lt. Commander who trained Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin). The move reunites O’Quinn with his former Lost co-star Daniel Dae Kim. O’Quinn starred in ABC’s pilot Hallelujah from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry that was aiming for a fall slot, but the show didn’t get picked up.

Hawaii Five-0 HQ set closed

Nothing is permanent in the world of television stage sets, even when they're functional. Case in point: the headquarters set of "Hawaii Five-0," which was built in an unused storage area of the downtown post office. It's gone.
What was once a suite of functional offices created as a backdrop for the show's characters — complete with dark wood trim, wanted posters and character-inspired desk decorations — is once again an empty space.
"There's not a sign that they were ever there," said Duke Gonzales, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service in Hawaii.
There are no discussions to rebuild the set, he said. CBS would only say that the HQ set, as it's known, "is under transition."
And that's a wrap. …

'Hawaii Five-0' Grace Park: 'Fame isn't fun'

Hawaii Five-0 actress Grace Park has suggested that being famous can have bizarre side-effects.

Park, who plays Kono on Hawaii Five-0, explained that she prefers to live a much more private existence than most actors.

"This has been a really interesting journey," she told Emmy magazine. "I'm really grateful [for Hawaii Five-0], but with that comes a lot of exposure."

Park went on to say: "There's an inordinate amount of attention put on actors. Some people want to make their lives public, but that doesn't mean everybody does. It kind of feels [as if] you landed in - well, not really Alice in Wonderland, because it's not that fun."

Park's breakthrough role was on the Canadian drama Edgemont, where she played a young woman struggling to come to grips with her sexuality. She would later go on to star in Battlestar Galactica and Jake 2.0

Hawaii Five-0 season 2 spoiler

Any word on what fans can expect from the second season of HAWAII FIVE-0? — DavidThe TV Addict: Taking the literal approach to answering your question, “Romance” would probably be the one word we’d choose to sum up the start of HAWAII FIVE-0′s second season. Particularly because the show’s Producers (or perhaps Network Bigwigs) have seemingly decided that if you can’t beat ‘em — them of course referring to timeslot competitor CASTLE — you might as well join ‘em. Which is to say, fans should brace themselves for a little island lovefest as Producers begin their search for a thirty-something bombshell to play Alex O’Loughlin’s part-time love interest, full-time Homeland Security Officer Lori Wilson, a character that sources describe as a female McGarrett

'Hawaii Five-0': A new team member and more Season 2 teases from EP Peter Lenkov

"Hawaii Five-0's" writers started work on Season 2 this week, so there's not a lot that executive producer Peter Lenkov can tell us about it.

Except: "I'm really excited because there are some major surprises -- there's one in the first episode of the season."

And also: "We wanted to explore the other islands. ... We're going to do that this year." And: "There is a resolution at the end of [episode] 201, but we still keep a big part of it open."

OK -- so maybe there are a few things to tell. Zap2it spoke with Lenkov Thursday (June 9) at PitchCon, an event for independent content producers sponsored by industry group NATPE, about new characters and where Season 2 will begin. He already knows that because he and Paul Zbyszewski, who co-wrote the team-splintering, McGarrett-in-handcuffs Season 1 finale, did so with the season premiere in mind.

"When we broke the story, we also broke the resolution. ... So we were writing the finale, and also writing the first episode of Season 2 at almost the same time," he says. "In order to put [characters] in those kinds of situations, you have to know the endgame. You can't just put it in and then paint yourself into a corner and think, How do I get them out? But we had all these really strong ideas of what we wanted to do in Season 2, and a lot of it is based on how we leave them at the end of Season 1."

So what does that mean? More highlights from our conversation with Lenkov:

On the resolution to the season-ending cliffhanger: "There is a resolution at the end of 201, but we still keep a big part of it open. So the team is sort of back together, not really. There are some dynamics that have changed in how they're going to move forward. There's also a new governor who's not going to be as lenient as the last governor [Jean Smart], because the last governor had an agenda. ...

"We're adding another character to the task force. Nobody knows that yet, but I'm telling you -- we're adding another [member] to this task force. And I'm really excited because there are some major surprises -- there's one in the first episode of the season that I'm hoping is as shocking as the governor being bad. We think it is, but we're hoping [the audience thinks] it's amazing, oh my god, I can't believe they did that. So I'm looking forward to that. And there's a domino effect to those kinds of things. Those things end up paying off. There's going to be a love interest for one of our characters. And actually we have a really great arc for Kono [Grace Park] that starts at the beginning of the year, which we're excited about because it really gives her a lot of meat."

On the new governor: "The last governor gave them full immunity and means, but that was just because she wanted to make McGarrett[Alex O'Loughlin]happy, and she was keeping an eye on him. I think the new governor is sort of more realistic and is going to draw the line -- he may give them jurisdiction, but maybe not the immunity and means they had last season. The idea is maybe he's going to be a little more strict with them."

Casting the new governor: "We're just sort of making lists of people. Ideally for us ... we'd want to cast somebody local from the island."

Island-hopping: "I think we wanted to explore the other islands, and I think we just never got the chance [in Season 1]. We're going to do that this year. ... We have these little ambitions, and that's one of them. Because it's Hawaii Five-0 and not Oahu Five-0, they can go to the other islands. And ultimately we want to explore off the islands. It's a task force, and the idea is there are no real boundaries for them."

"Hawaii Five-0" is scheduled to begin filming its second season in early July and will be back on CBS in the fall.

Masi Oka on 'Hawaii Five-O': I'm a series regular!

Look who’s becoming an islander! Heroes alum Masi Oka told EW that he’ll become a series regular on Hawaii Five-O when the drama returns for a second season on CBS this fall. “They were kind enough to offer me more regular work,” Oka told EW while walking the red carpet of the Super 8 premiere on Wednesday. “I don’t know yet if it I will be needed for every episode because they are writing the next season now but Dr. Max Bergman will be more involved. I guess they will need more help from the coroner. I think he got a good response from viewers so they are looking to featuring him more
“I’m happy because I like the show, the guys are great to work with and it’s Hawaii. Who doesn’t want to work in paradise?” Oka continued. “I hope they delve into his personal life more. Max Bergman is a nut and I’d liked to know more about who he is and what he does with his time but that is not up to me. But I think there is a lot left to develop with him. I think it is going to be a fun job. It was not hard for me to accept the offer. We start in July. I am just excited. I love the cast. I love the crew. I liked the original show but I think they have done a great job updating it.”

Sand, Surf & Shootouts - Hawaii Five-0 cast interview in TV Week Oz

Source: The Five-0's

Hawaii Five-0 gets high five and premieres in South Africa

The free-wheeling cop drama that put Hawaii on the international TV map in 1969 returns in what producers say was a re-imagining rather than a remake or sequel to the beloved original and with more emphasis on character.
“A remake suggests we are doing exactly the same thing again,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman told TV reporters.
“We felt we had to find the spirit of the original and bring it into modern times,” Kurtzman said, adding that the new version “pays tribute to everything that was good about the original show”.
Like the original hit show, the new version’s cop team hunts down criminals, often ending with the catchphrase “Book ’em, Danno!”
But the rebooted version aims to add more witty banter, character back-story and edginess to the formulaic detective work of the first series, which preceded a generation of crime dramas such as Magnum PI and Law & Order.
“You can do great action, and we do,” said executive producer Peter Lenkov. “But what’s fresh and different is the character development and humour.”
Filmed on site in Hawaii, Hawaii Five-0 aims to appeal to viewers by taking them to island scenes shot at sun-soaked beaches and landmark locations including Pearl Harbor, Iolani Palace and Waikiki.
Australian actor Alex O’Loughlin plays Detective Steve McGarrett, originally played by Jack Lord. As a former Navy Seal, the new McGarrett has been recruited by Hawaii’s governor to lead a task force against criminals and terrorists intruding into the US through its Pacific islands.
“He’s part mercenary and his tactics are pretty crazy. He does whatever he needs to do to get the job done,” Alex said during a break from filming in Honolulu. “We have respect for what came before us, but we’re not drawing from the old show.”
Unlike his predecessor, Alex is more likely to go into a suspect’s house wearing a bulletproof vest, guns blazing.
The Australian actor has Jack Lord’s big shoes to fill after previously playing the lead in Three Rivers and Moonlight.
Alongside McGarrett is sidekick Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan), a by-the-book detective who’s less than pleased with McGarrett’s full-speed-ahead attitude.
“I don’t think that he’s a bad guy or anything,” said Scott, who has appeared on Entourage.
“I just think he’s crazy,” he said. “That sets up the butting of heads and the personality clash.”
Rounding out the four-member team are characters Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua. Both were part of the original series, but this time they should get more prominent roles because the show won’t rely as much on McGarrett alone.
Another big change: Instead of Kono being the burly man seen in the series’ first run, the character has been transformed into a swimsuit-wearing rookie cop played by Grace Park.
“To be able to have the experience all over again and revisit it with fresher eyes – that’s something people look forward to, to have a new different experience,” said Park, who previously starred on Battlestar Galactica.
“Otherwise, we would’ve just rereleased the old DVDs again.”
Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Chin Ho Kelly, said the show’s reinvention of itself would emphasise more teamwork rather than always making McGarrett the primary hero.
“Our goal isn’t as much to improve on the original series as it is to adapt it to modern audiences,” said Daniel, best known for his role in Lost. “There’s a different storytelling style now.”
Lenkov said
its writers hoped to avoid the mistakes that led to the cancellation of other recent remakes such as Knight Rider and Bionic Woman. Both of those shows lasted only one season.
The characters in Hawaii Five-0 would be more three-dimensional than during the series’ first run, with their own troubled histories, unpredictable family ties and personal mistakes, he said.
Viewers shouldn’t expect the new McGarrett’s hair to always stay in place or for his decisions to always work out.
“Our Steve McGarrett – he’s a little more flawed than Jack Lord was,” Peter said. “That’s what makes him an interesting character. There’s a little greyness to him. I didn’t want him to be a superhero.” – Sapa-AP

Hawaii Five-0's Grace is riding a new wave (Adelaide Now)

Grace Park, who plays agent Kono Kalakaua, has not mastered the art of surfing that her character is supposed to be a professional at. Picture:Neil Jacobs/CBS Source: Supplied

SHE'S the stunning beach babe on Hawaii Five-0 but don't go calling Grace Park a ''perfect 10''.
While most women would be flattered to be awarded the tag, the actress, who plays rookie agent Kono Kalakaua in the classic TV show revival, says being given a label which is unrealistic is unfair to women.
''I'm like, `Do not push me as that because, first of all I don't have a perfect 10 body. I love what I have but don't put thoughts in other people's heads','' she says.

''I think there's a lot of pressure and also a lot of noise in the media about what makes you more worthy as a person and it's not like `You're beautiful in any way you come. Embrace it'.''
And even with a supposedly flawless figure, Park says she suffers from the same anxieties about the way she looks as any other woman, and it is for this reason she is so against being put on a pedestal.
''She's a girl next door, she's a bit of an ass kicker sometimes but, at the same time, she's a rookie so she has a naivety and a freshness to her,'' she says.
Kono is also supposed to be a pro surfer something Park is definitely not.
The Canadian, previously best known for her role in Battlestar Galactica, had never even paddled on a surfboard before starting the Hawaii-based series.

''When you only have two weeks and you're supposed to be pro, you're not going to get anywhere close, so all they had me doing was coming in and out of the water,'' she laughs.
But, filming the basic action for the pilot episode ended up proving traumatic for the actor, with an intense shore break throwing her around like an ant in a washing machine.
Without knowing it, she developed almost a mild case of post-traumatic stress disorder from the incident, which she only realised when she returned to the water two months later to film another scene.
''I went in the water and did the paddling, came in and out of the water, then finished all my stuff, then I just started crying sobbing,'' she says.

''I felt nauseous, I felt really crap and then I realised I was realising all the trauma from the pilot.''
Not quite as distressing but still tough was trying to master the local Hawaiian tongue.
Her character is supposed to be able to speak pidgin, which for Park meant an 80-hour language session.
''They got in a native speaker and said, `You have to copy her'. So I listened to her and did it and she said, `No'. So I'd do it again and she'd say, `No' and then I was like, `What should I be doing? Is it the syllable I'm pronouncing? What's wrong?' and she was like, `I don't know. It's just wrong','' Park laughs.
Eventually the star got the hang of things but only thanks to a friend and fellow actor who helped run lines with her.

With her character also a black belt in jujitsu and fluent in four languages, it's a challenging role Park is embracing with both hands.

Scott Caan at #5 on Buddy TV Hottest Homicide Detectives

There are plenty of kinds of cops on TV, but the best ones are homicide detectives, the police who track down killers. It might be hard work, but these 15 homicide detectives make it look easy and very appealing.

#5 Scott Caan as Det. Danny Williams, Hawaii Five-0

Danny’s not supposed to be the “hot" one on Hawaii Five-0, but he steals our hearts anyway. After all, what’s hotter than an attractive man who wisecracks his way through even the grimmest of crimes?

The Season's Best Cliff-Hangers (TV Guide)

Hawaii Five-0 (CBS)
Cliff-Hanger: McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) was arrested for the Governor’s murder. Oh no, 5-0 is no more!
Now What? With Kono (Grace Park) in trouble also and Danno (Danny Williams) being torn between work and family, Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) is the only one actively working on the right side of the law. We’re very curious how they’ll extricate themselves, considering their history of bending the rules. And let’s not forget that Wo Fat is still at large.

Season finale keep us cliffhanging till fall (Kansas City)

In a word: Explosive
What happened: McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) held the governor (Jean Smart) at gunpoint, demanding that she confess her involvement in his mother's murder. Wo Fat killed the governor and framed McGarrett, who wound up in jail.
What now: With Kono under arrest for theft and Danny considering leaving to be with his ex-wife, who's having his baby, it looks as if the Five-0 team is history. But is it?

Thumbs up for the new Hawaii Five-O (The Blackshear Times)

Thumbs up to the new Hawaii Five-O.

Most weeknights I am out watching one of your governments. Lately, however, I’ve had a little more freedom to watch prime-time television.

This year, I haven’t missed an episode of the new, re-tooled version of “Hawaii Five-O”.

The season finale aired just a couple of weeks ago and it was a barn burner.

It’s silly, but the writer in me, thinks about plot twists while I am watching. I will be interested to see how some of the twists and turns in the finale are resolved in the fall.

Overall, it’s been a fun season for the series.

I was young when the original series ended, but thanks to re-runs and DVD box sets I still get to watch Jack Lord’s Steve McGarrett and his Hawaii Five-0 team bust the bad guys. At the end, he would turn to his second in command, the always-loyal Danny Williams and utter those famous words.

“Book ‘em Danno.”

Actor James MacArthur, who played “Danno”, died in Jacksonville last October at the age of 72. At the time of his death, he was reportedly planning to make a cameo appearance on the new series.

All the originals are gone now: Lord, Gilbert Lani “Zulu” Kauhi, Kam Fong and now MacArthur.

The good news is that we still have “Five-0,” albeit a fresher, hipper version.

Yes, I admit I was slow to come around.

If you will remember, last year when CBS announced the new series, I said I would withhold judgement until I saw the real thing.

I got lots of comments on my column last year, many of them courtesy of the world-wide web. Several were ungenerous, lambasted me for praising the old series, said I didn’t have any sense and concluded I am an old fogey.

I’m guilty on all counts.

I’m still a fan of Jack Lord and nothing can fix the old fogey part and that other stuff.

While I still don’t know exactly what to think about O’Loughlin’s tattooed, combat boot wearing, unorthodox, push-the-envelope Steve McGarrett, you have to admit he is one cool, intense dude. And he’s a former Navy SEAL, which turned out to be a pretty smooth move considering recent events. Those guys deserve any tip of the hat they receive.

O’Loughlin brings his own take to the character. I like the give and take he and the new “Danno”, Scott Caan, have. “Danno” is by the book, while Steve has a “bend the rules” style. The friction brings lots of banter between the two.

Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park round out the group making for a nice ensemble cast.

The series is still introduced by the same catchy theme song.

Jean Smart, of Designing Women fame, played a smart, shrewd Governor Jameson in the first year. I hate what happened to her in the finale, but there was that dastardly Wo Fat again. My grandma was an excellent judge of character. She would have looked him over and observed: “He just looks mean.”

I am looking forward to the next season come this fall.

Monday nights. CBS. Aloha. Be there.

The Lone Survivor

Hawaii Five-0 is just straight up entertaining. Is it a show worthy of a bunch of awards and the like, absolutely not, but if you just want a no brainer, entertaining action packed show this is all of that and more. Perhaps one of the best retro-reboots for a television show of all-time the cast is absolutely amazing and the blend of comedy, action and drama is virtually perfect. If you haven’t watched this show don’t worry, it will be back next year and good lord was the Season 1 finale an incredible cliff hanger!

Season 1 finale in Poptimal`s Most Shocking Season Finale

When brainstorming for this season’s most shocking season finale, I considered a variety of different shows. But the show I kept coming back to was Hawaii Five-O. Let me first say that I’m a big fan of this reboot. All season long, we watched the easy-on-the-eyes Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and his task force take down the bad guys with his slightly unconventional methods in beautiful Hawaii. Unfortunately, things finally caught up with this tight knit task force in the finale and severely divided the team—McGarrett, who uncovers a connection between the Governor and Wo Fat, is framed for the murder of the Governor and a member of her staff. Chin takes his old job back with HPD as a lieutenant and Kono is arrested for stealing the money from the evidence locker that they used to save Chin earlier in the season. Plus, Danno is left to try to reunite the gang, while his ex-wife (pregnant with their second child from their affair) returns to Jersey with their daughter, Grace. So, the Governor is dead, the task force in disarray and Steve McGarrett is in handcuffs—not what I was expecting at all. This finale left me shaking my head and wondering how are they going to resolve all of this next season? -Allison Toner
